Bed Throws
Bed throws add nice touches to your bed and to the entire bedroom as well. It adds a perky dash of colors to your bedroom. Since you get to choose the fabric, color, and design these throw blankets give you a lot of personalized options. However, do take note that they do not necessarily need to be expensive to become really beautiful.
Choosing the Fabric
Other than adding intrinsic details to your bed and thematic colors to your bedroom, another purpose to having bed throws is to add comfort and warmth to your sleeping space. You don’t have to choose really expensive fabrics to make your room look a lot better. As long as the details of the fabric match your bed and your mood then it’s good enough to do the job.
Some of the popular fabric used to make bed throws include fleece, faux fur, and cotton. These fabrics are generally less expensive but they create a new chic look to your sleeping space. They are usually easy to work with and you only get to do a little sewing. You can personalize and accessorize your throw blankets according to your own creativity.
When choosing a fabric to work on, get one that fits well into your budget. Make sure that it is soft enough to be comfortable when you use it. Choose fabric that does not easily fray. This makes it a lot easier to work on, especially if you are new at sewing. Since the fabric doesn’t fray that easily when you make your cuts you usually don’t have to make double folds on the hems.
Making Your Own Bed Throws
One of the possible options is to make your own throw blankets. Do take note that you will still need to have at least minimal sewing skills in order to do this. This simply means that you should at least know how to use a sewing machine. The usual materials and equipment you need include the fabric you will be working on, a sewing machine, scissors, measuring tape, thread, and straight pins.
The first step to sewing your own bed throws is to measure the size of your bed and decide on the length and dimensions of your throws. Remember that the throws will usually be folded and it will be placed hanging over the bed when you’re not using them. With that in mind, you should determine your preferred extra yardage when deciding on the length of the throw.
Remember to add an inch of hemming to your measurements before you purchase the fabric. Once all the measurements are done and you have the dimensions jotted down on a pad you can go to the store and buy the fabric you want to use. Another thing you will need to purchase at the store is a thread that will match the fabric you will be buying.
Take note that even though the clerk at the store will cut the fabric for you, you should measure it again when you get home. Cut off any excess length of fabric you find. Remember to always stick with your final measurements.
Now you get to work with the sewing machine. Before you do, pin all around the fabric using your straight pins. About an inch into the fabric will do nicely. Now you need to sow all around the fabric near to inside edge. Remember to make smooth edges especially when working on the corners. You can add trims, fringes, and bindings to the edges as you see fit.
